This piece uses dimensional fabric flowers made by Terry. I challenged myself to think creatively like Terry by making bright color choices. The vibrant colors make me happy.
Homage to Terry

I made this piece after spending time with Terry and admiring her use of color and texture. I was totally inspired by her and really felt like I was capturing her spirit in making it. In retrospect it feels like I got it wrong because Terry was all about the color blue. Then I hear her saying, “Who cares what anyone else thinks. Do what makes YOU happy.” It gives me great joy to look at it and remember why I made it.
Orphan Block Collage

Terry was always generous with her knowledge and materials. She regularly gave me orphan blocks which I happily used to improve my skills and create quilts for Healing House. This collage is made from images of my favorites of those donated quilts. I love that I can see Terry’s influence in my increasingly bold use of color.

As much as I enjoy looking at hand-dyed fabric, I didn’t love the process. I gave an antique doily to Terry to experiment with—and keep—but once she dyed it, she returned it to me. I did not know what I might do with it until the idea of the Bits & Pieces exhibit emerged. When I took the doily out of my box of remnants, I began to assemble the collage immediately. I used the batting for body (two layers for the center), since quilting was a large part of Terry’s creative life as it is of mine—even though she expertly used a machine, while I do everything by hand. The piece is a tribute to the friendship I will always cherish.
Season Change

A favorite outing for me and my husband is walking in our 100 acres of woods and prairie. Each season's cycle has its own power to entice with its unique colors, smells and textures. Even though the paths we take don't vary, each moment of the year has its own beauty.
Indigo-dyed cotton canvas, botanically-printed cotton and wool, repurposed tea towel scraps, textile labels, and straps from work gloves. Hand stitched.
